Excuses, news, and stuff.

So this is more of a mini-blog, because sometimes I want to include things in the main blog but I don't want it to stop being about the poetry.

At my university accommodation on the 6th of May, 2014 -
Well, it's fair to say that a whole bunch of things happened since my last update to this page. I finished my A Levels and moved to Colchester, as I'm now studying Philosophy at Essex University. I'm absolutely loving it, too. The course; the lecturers; and the friends I've made are all fantastic. I couldn't have wished for more, really. The biggest problem this poses is that, when I'm at Essex I miss the fantastic people in Kent; and when I'm in Kent, I miss the fantastic people in Essex. It's gotten to the point where it feels like I've got two homes, and that's a pretty sweet life if you ask me.

Unfortunately, being so damn busy (and with a few things going on with my personal life), I missed a couple of months this year. My original aim was to make sure that I get at least one poem done per month, and I kept that up for a long while, in my defence. Alas, it didn't last. I've got exams approaching (the first ones I'll have ever taken at university) and so I can't promise anything on this front, but I'll do my best.

Keep it real, folks.

At school on the 30th of January -
I've started writing more now that my exams have finished ( for now ), and I'm hoping to continue that trend. It'd make a very nice change, for sure. Not all of it has made its way to the blog, admittedly, because there's quite a lot I'd like to write that I haven't a) gotten round to, or b) finished yet. It's a process, guys.

The exams were very stressful, but it seems like forever ago at the minute - I'm having a very relaxing couple of weeks, even with school. On the topic, there's been some pretty cool developments on that front. I had a fantastic interview at the university of Essex and I'm eagerly awaiting their offer (I'm looking to study philosophy next year), and I was able to take part in the decision making process for the next head teacher for the school I'm currently at. A fantastic decision was made and I'm very glad to have been a part of it. Having said that, I'm very ready for this month to end.

I've got my 18th next month (on the 18th) and plenty of suitable celebrations to go alongside that. It goes without saying that it's going to be fantastic. Oh yes.

Keep it funky.

Revision Time! 16th of January (2013) -
First of all, I'd like to wish everyone that I haven't already a very happy New Year - I hope it's treating you well. I'd say that I've been super busy, but I haven't really. It was the pretty usual (and very lovely) Christmas and New Years fare, but it was made exceptional with my good choice in company. I've many people I ought to thank more often.

It's been (and is still being) an odd week for me. Pretty much all of my January exams started today and end on Friday, so it's been quite busy. Quite busy and very depressing, but y'know, c'est la vie. I hope that everyone that has to face exams this month performs to the top of their ability!

Have a nice time, yo.

A dull 31st of October -
It's Halloween and I'm inside writing poetry, having indulged in a few hours of Netflix and too much pizza. Judge away. Really, I won't mind.

Everything has gone pretty well this month. I've got an offer from the university of Sheffield already and I've got a date for my interview at the university of Essex so that's very cool. School is pretty standard at the minute, and I'm enjoying the social side of things (despite being inside tonight). Got a party to look forward to on the weekend and then it's back to school.

I've had three poems up this month, which is a pleasant change in form from the rest of the year. I've just had a lot more inspiration around this month. I could definitely get used to it.

Keep it spooky.

The rainy evening of the 11th of October -
It's fair to say that the last fortnight has been odd. Definitely a good kind of odd, though. The kind of odd I could get used to. More than that, I've finalised my UCAS application, meaning that I will be applying to universities very soon. That seems kinda crazy. Time really does fly.

I wish everyone the best of luck and have every intention of writing more, now.

Keep it real, guys.

"If anyone asks I was asleep" o'clock on the 31st of August -
It's September tomorrow. Seems a bit obvious, doesn't it? Yet the month has still managed to sneak up on me. The Summer has simply flown past, though I have to say, I lived it exactly how I intended (and that's probably a first for me).

The big news, besides heading bravely (and blindly) into year 13, is that I've got some very close friends departing for various universities soon. I feel privileged to have had the pleasure of such friendships, I'm excited about their futures, and I know that it's not at all the end... but I can't help but feel that I'll be losing something this month. Which is why I'm awfully glad I still have fantastic friends stuck here with me. There's more than I deserve, truth be told. It is to the escapees, though, that I write my most recent poem. Because you are all truly unforgettable.

Friday 29th June at sober o'clock -
I went to my first prom last night, and it was a pretty excellent night. I'll admit that it wasn't really technically aimed at my year, but nevertheless, I bought a ticket and suited up. Some of my best friends were there last night, and I'll miss them a lot when they go off to universities around the UK. Having said that, more than I'll miss them, I'll be both happy for them as they chase after the dreams, and jealous that they're off getting their degrees as I finish my A-levels.

I wrote another poem this morning, and I spent a long time refining it and trying to get the rhythm right. I'm not sure if it's 100% even now, but I think that it's close enough (for now). I'll look at it tomorrow, when I'll have a fresh perspective and therefore, a much better chance of spotting anything that blatantly needs amending.

Peace out, yo.

"I should be asleep" o'clock on the 7th April 2012 -
I've written a poem and it's not the end of the month, which means that this is most certainly a pleasant change from the last two months. I'm going to try to get back into the habit of writing more than just one a month, but with exams coming up in May, I really can't promise anything.

I'm rather proud of the last poem I've just uploaded, and would love to hear your feedback.

I hope you're all doing fantastically.

Good night!

A little bit later, but still the 29th March 2012 -
This is just a quick post to say that I've had some awesome feedback from a whole range of different people since I started writing this blog - and it seems that people all around the world have had a chance to read my poetry, which is just fantastic. I'd like to encourage more people to get in touch, since I know a lot of people read this (and it's really appreciated) but never really give much feedback. I guess if you keep coming back and reading it, you're enjoying what I'm writing - and that's enough, really, but I'd still love to hear from you if you have any feedback. Even if it's not 100% positive.

Anyway, I get the feeling I'm probably neglecting some homework... So I'm off now. I hope you have an excellent evening.

A sensible time in the evening of the 29th March 2012 -
Y'know what I'm not a fan of? Thursdays. It'd feel wrong to complain too much, though, since I've got two weeks off after tomorrow... Even if those two weeks should be occupied with revision. "Should" stands as the operative word there, of course.

I finally got around to writing something yesterday. Some months it'll take me twenty-something days to think of a poem, and then around 10 minutes to actually write one as soon as I get that first line or idea. I've always found that a little odd.

In other (school related) news, I've applied for Head Boy. The prestigious title would mean I get to sound important and make speeches and stuff. Though the more mundane side involves organising prefects and acting as the middle man for staff and pupils. I've sent in my letter of application and after the Easter break we'll be going in for interviews. The competition is pretty tough, so this will definitely be interesting.

I think that's honestly as exciting as this week has been, though the weekend promises more exciting endeavours. I'm very much looking forward to that.

Adam for Head Boy 2012.

Way past my bed time on the 5th February 2012 -
It's snowing outside. Or at least it was. It's always quietly entertaining to see a beach with snow on it. Something there just doesn't seem to add up.

It's been a strange night. I'm not sure if it's one I'll look back on fondly or not.

I hope you're doing okay (whoever you are, you lovely person you) - and I hope the year hasn't been too bad so far. I've had a few AS exams already, and the rest are yet to come. Cannot wait for that.

Keep reading, I'm gonna go sleep.

"It's dark outside" o'clock of the 7th January  2012 -
Although of course there's no way you'd know otherwise I think it's worth noting that I'm still writing 2011 on every, single, date I have to write. I imagine I'll keep that up until 2013.

As per usual with these posts I've just uploaded a new poem. It's short but it's also optimistic - which seems fitting considering the New Year and exams on the horizon.

I hope everyone had an excellent Christmas and a New Year's Eve they can remember and I hope that this year treats us well. If it just so happens to treat me slightly better, well that's fine too.

Happy New Year.

The rather chilly evening of the 17th November 2011 -
It's cold outside. It's somewhat cold inside. Using my powers of deduction I'm going to guess it's approaching Winter and stop mentioning the weather - actually, I can't promise something like that, I'm English.

Anyway, some relevant information for you, dear reader. I've just uploaded a poem and it might seem like it's just about a shifty guy offering a strange game revolving around some dice and false promises but there's more to it than that. I'll let you draw your own conclusions on this one. One positive thing to take away from this though, is that it's not the final week of the month and I've published a poem, so this is progress from the last two months.

Wrap up warm everybody, it's only gonna get colder - unless you're in Australia. You lucky people you.

Live long and prosper.

The very early hours of the 30th October 2011 -
This month has been pretty good. Not exactly exciting, but hey, that's what you get when you fill 5 out of 7 days with school. Having said that, school's been pretty good still. I'm not exactly looking forward to our exams in January but it could be worse. Much worse.

I just uploaded a new poem... and I'm really cutting it fine with the timing here, since it's very nearly the end of the month. But as always, my aim is to have at least one poem every month, and everything else I've tried to write until tonight hasn't really been worth reading. Trust me.

So I hope you like it, and I hope you all enjoy the extra hour of sleep, courtesy of the clocks going back an hour.

Peace and love.

The evening of the 26th September 2011 -
Well, I regret leaving it so late in the month to write something, but I guess I've been pretty pre-occupied with school. Now that I'm more settled in again I think it's safe to assume I should be writing more as I had been.

So the poem I just uploaded - 'Charge' - is actually a piece of homework for history. We've been studying the Crimean War and we had to do a response of sorts to the Charge of the Light Brigade poem, in poetry form. It was suggested that perhaps a modern or more honest twist could be used, but I thought I'd go for something a little silly, but at the same time, rather honest. I think it works quite well, but I'm tempted to attempt a more serious poem since the topic at hand is rather grim in places. We'll see, I guess.

Since I mentioned school I thought I'd say a quick bit about it: it's going well.

Keep on rockin'.

The pretty early hours of the 27th August 2011 -
This is gonna be a short post, just wanted to add that I got my results and I did good, especially in the subjects I'm taking next year, which is promising.

I hope everyone got the results they wanted, and I hope we all do well in the next academic year, whether we're carrying onto sixth form, heading off to college, or starting university. That being said, good luck whatever you're doing; if you're like me, you'll need it.

The incredibly early hours of the 24th August 2011 -
Anyone at GCSE level, or their parents for that matter, should recognise that date as the day before the big day. The large occasion. The rather significant event... And other such synonyms, because it's the day before results day. Naturally there's a whole range of views on that from friends from the sometimes too-honest "I don't really care" to the sometimes unfortunately well placed concerns. It's a time for reflecting back on the two years leading up to this, but also for looking forward to the future. But above all else, when life gets really tough, I can comfort myself with the simple thought that I now have suits. It feels good, man.

Oh, and it's a minor pet peeve, but when people wish me luck for results day, I always feel that it would've been much better to wish me luck before I actually sat the exams.

Just saying.

In poetry related news (the rarer of the news columns) I just uploaded a new poem called Sunrise. It's really cheery, and I'm rather proud of the rhyming and rhythm on that one, so if you haven't checked it out and somehow got here, go do that, I don't think you'll regret it too much.

Good luck to everyone on results day, I'm off to bed.

23rd July 2011 -
Just put two poems on the blog that I'd written in the past week. They're not my favourites out of everything I've written, but I'm putting them up here anyway. Maybe it'll be more popular with my (few) regular readers, y'never know. And this month has been pretty good in terms of page views so far - so thanks to everyone who reads this: it's appreciated.

Officially, the Summer holidays have only really just started, but I've been off school for weeks. I'm enjoying this.

13th July 2011 -
So I now know how to say goodbye in Finnish, as someone taught me in response to the poem 'Finnish'. The same person that actually taught me some Finnish words a while ago... the rest of the story in the poem is fiction though.

'Hyvästi' for now, everyone.

The very early hours 11th July 2011 -
Just put a new poem on partly inspired by the imagery from what was an incredibly boring short story collection we had to read for English GCSE. There was one story called 'The Winter Oak', which featured a young boy who was consistently late for school because he took this beautiful route to school which involved going right by a big Oak tree, dubbed the 'Winter Oak'. I really liked the imagery there and what I felt the tree represented.

The actual theme in the poem is different to the story, as are all the details. No plagiarism here folks.

Just saying.

9th July 2011 -
The blog reached 199 page views last month, which might not seem like a lot but it's a fair amount for this blog, so I'm pretty pleased about that. Thanks to anybody who checks my blog, especially the few that check it regularly since I don't update it that frequently. I'm hoping to get more posts done through July and August before I start Sixth Form in September.

A-Levels will be a laugh. Right?

Sometime later on the 19th June 2011 -
So I just uploaded the second poem this month and I feel the need to point out that it's not a true story (big shock, I know) but there was a bit of truth to it. In that I was once taught a bit of Finnish, but never goodbye. And when I realised that after going through some of my old stuff I thought it'd fit well into this sort of thing. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't, I'm not sure. I had trouble getting the flow of the piece right, it makes sense when I read it, but I'm not sure if it will for other people. It's a gamble. Wooo.

Adam Compton - Living life on the wild side since 2k11.

19th June 2011 -
I haven't posted a lot, it's currently at 1 poem these last two months and that's partly because I'm lazy, but mostly because of exam season. I'm now completely done with exams and I won't have to go into school until Sixth Form after doing a bit of coursework for PE BTEC. So for all intents and purposes I'm pretty much free now. Which means, for the few people that regularly check my blog, and for the rest of you who stumble on here when I link it on another site, that I aim to be posting more... Unless I have a very boring month.

And to all those who are finishing their exams this month: don't get too drunk.
